Tony and Barbara – living as fully as possible

People often praise the quality of light – in their home area, during a holiday, when making art or tending their garden. When you notice ‘the light’ you also notice colours and shadows and the intensity of objects. It makes you reach for a camera. It also – and we are thinking of our new garden – adds a sense of energy, purpose, life.

As we struggle to establish our new life together in this ground-floor flat we are aware that living as fully as possible rests on several platforms.

{1} We use our own life experiences thus far. We met in 1963 and next year we will have been married 60 years including our twins, both careers, all the people and all the places.

{2} We are trying to set up routines and good practices that are shared and sustainable.

{3} We recognise that we depend hugely on other people both as help that’s ‘bought in’ and as help that comes from family and friends.

{4} We – in our media-led, war-riven, and climate-threatened planet – persist in arguing for and working at our values. [a] Its important to acknowledge the sources of our values – for us Christian, political, feminist, interfaith. [b] We desire a more equitable and peaceful planet. To achieve this, we need partnerships with people and groups who share values. And, we need not to be distracted by the fact that their values come from different cultural and ideological sources.
