Tony and Barbara - being in and out of ‘touch.’

It’s been quite a difficult couple of months. But we are now well into the many good things about our new flat. Top of the list must be that it’s on one level, near to our Methodist church, that Tony can use the wheelchair, that Barbara has a more accessible garden.

Barbara was in hospital for a few days but has now ended the antibiotics and we hope is over the presenting problem.

Whilst Adam was down from Gateshead-Newcastle helping us Tony did his first ever transition from wheelchair to car. The exciting task was to get the flu and Covid jabs!

These experiences, [plus relying on carers two or three times a day], remind us of some considerable differences. They are between issues that affect us, that literally ‘touch’ us, over against issues that we care about. Examples include poverty, racism, wars, climate change, the Brexit decision, the Labour Government’s impact.

Our view, and much of our experience of the world, comes from the Guardian, BBC TV, Facebook and the people we meet. But we are aware that there seems to be many unresolved and heightened conflicts between individuals, cultures, and nations.

Much of it, at base, is to us about freedoms especially of speech, negative behaviour resulting in hatred and violence, and the use of extreme wealth to gain undemocratic power. The big questions are what steps, strategies and policies can change all this? And can we help?
